“Now I can say loudly and openly what I have been saying to myself on my knees”
Duke Ellington
Referred to by Ellington as Òthe most important thing I have ever doneÓ, the three Sacred Concerts wr itten by the great jazz legend in 1965, 1968 and 1973 are unique works in the choral repertoire that defy conventional musical definition. Incorporating jazz singers and instrumentalists, choruses and a tap dancer, these exuberant religious works set texts from the Bible as well as those wr itten by Ellington himself. The performance will comprise a selection from all three of the Sacred Concerts and will be interspersed with movements from the Oxford Blues Service by Roderick Williams, a work directly influenced by Ellington and the Sacred Concerts.
